The Southland Conference has been dominated by the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks for a long time and the conference was all over the sports media this year when the Lumberjacks beat the Duke Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium. It was one of the biggest wins of the year and arguably the biggest win in Southland Conference history.
Writing about Stephen F. Austin would have been easy they have the best team, most of the best players and fans know who they are. It was time to focus on the other members of the conference. The Lumberjacks did lose a game in the conference last season and when it happened it wasn’t really news, even though it should have been.
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders were the team who pulled the upset and for them, it was the biggest upset they have had in a long time. The Islanders have made the NCAA tournament one time in their school history and that was in the 2006-2007 season.
Since then it has been a lot of mediocrity and .500 records for the Islanders. Things are looking up for head coach Willis Wilson, and this year he has one of the best returning players in the conference to build around.
Senior guard Myles Smith enters the year looking to prove he is one of the best players in the conference. He wants to also prove that last year’s upset of the conference powerhouse was more than just a fluke more like an arrival to the top of the conference for the Islanders.
