Stony Brook had a tough run last year, ultimately finishing at 9-14 overall and 7-9 in the America East. That record left the Seawolves ahead of only NJIT, Binghamton and Maine in the conference standings.

Stony Brook was sitting at 6-4 at one point last year following a five-game win streak. The Seawolves faltered after that however, going just 3-9 in their final dozen games. Stony Brook’s season came to an end with a 64-62 loss to UMass Lowell in the America East Tournament.

Over on the George Mason side, they had their ups and downs as a team last year with a 13-9 overall record and an 8-6 run in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Patriots finished in sixth place in the standings behind St. Bonaventure, VCU, Davidson, St. Louis and UMass.

The good news is that George Mason finished off their regular season with a nice 4-0 run. Those winning ways continued for the Patriots in the Second Round of the A-10 Tournament with a 73-59 result over George Washington, but George Mason was stopped 99-67 by Davidson in the Quarterfinals.

PICK: I’m going to try George Mason. This is going to be a key season for the Patriots as they look to take a step forward in the conference rankings. We’ll see some new faces in bigger roles this year with the departures of double-digit scorers Jordan Miller, Javon Greene and Tyler Kolek, but George Mason does get some intriguing newcomers like DeVon Cooper and Davonte Gaines. With the added experience and depth I like the Patriots to compete as an NCAA Tournament bubble team if all goes well.
