The Lafayette Leopards come into the 2021-22 season looking to build on a fairly successful 2020-21 campaign, finishing the year 9-6 overall, including a 9-5 mark in conference play, marking the first time since 1999-2000 that the Leopards had back-to-back winning records in conference play. Lafayette got the #3 seed in the Patriot League tournament, but they were swiftly bounced by Bucknell in the quarterfinals. Neal Quinn is the main man returning for Lafayette as the 7-footer logged 10.6 PPG with 5.5 RPG and 3.8 APG last season. The Leopards will need their freshmen, most notably CJ Fulton, to step up as starting PG Tyrone Perry tore his ACL in April and isn’t likely to return until the new year. Expect Lafayette to struggle through the early portion of their schedule but to hopefully get Perry back in time to kick off conference play.

The Syracuse Orange will look to build on a solid 16-10 mark in the regular season, including 9-7 in ACC conference play to finish with the 8-seed in the conference tournament. The Orange defeated NC State in the second round before falling to Virginia in the quarters, but the Orange were good enough to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. ‘Cuse knocked off San Diego State and West Virginia as an 11-seed before falling to Houston in the Sweet Sixteen.  Syracuse brings back some nice pieces like Buddy Boeheim who had 17.8 PPG and 2.6 APG last season as well as Joseph Girard who had 9.8 PPG and 3.5 APG last season. But the Orange got a prized transfer in Jimmy Boeheim Jr. from Cornell, who averaged 16.7 PPG and 5.6 RPG last season and I wonder if the coach had anything to do with him transferring. Either way, the Orange also got a pair of solid transfers in Cole Swider from Villanova (5.7 PPG, 2.8 RPG) and Symir Torrence from Marquette (2.4 PPG) to bolster the lineup heading into the season. Look for the Orange to once again be in the mix for the NCAA tournament but to also once again sweat it out on Selection Sunday.

Lafayette is 20-9-1 ATS in their last 30 road games and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 Tuesday games. Syracuse is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 Tuesday games.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Brothers Boeheim work together in the system but one thing’s for sure, Syracuse and that 2-3 zone will lock teams up. Look for Syracuse to bottle up Lafayette here and for the Leopards to struggle to get going from the opening tip. Lay the points with Syracuse here.
