The Michigan State Spartans will look to win their second Champions Classic matchup in a row when they tip off the regular season against the third-ranked Kansas Jayhawks on Tuesday night. The Spartans (15-13 in 2020-21), who tied with Maryland for eighth place in the Big Ten last season, defeated No. 6 Duke 75-69 in last year’s Champions Classic in Durham, N.C. The Jayhawks (21-9), who placed second in the Big 12, topped Kentucky 65-62 in last year’s event. The Spartans and Jayhawks series dates back to 1960 and is tied at 7-7.

He led the Big 12 in field-goal percentage at 51.5 percent, and connected on 79.6 percent of his free throws. He won the Big 12 Most Improved Player Award and was named to the All-Big 12 second team.

Junior guard Tyson Walker will make his Spartans debut and is expected to be a major contributor. Walker, a Northeastern transfer, was the 2021 Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the All-CAA first team. He was a Lou Henson Award finalist in 2021, which is awarded to the top mid-major player in the country. At Northeastern, Walker averaged 18.8 points, 4.8 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game.
